The setting is 1911. Cabaret is just starting to reveal itself – in all of its unheard of styles, dance moves, sounds and mannerisms – around intimate venues of the early 20th century United States.

Cabaret was hardly born in America but, that doesn’t mean the U.S. didn’t embrace the variety of its entertainment and make it their own. Quite the contrary: the emergence of the jazz scene in the 1920s lent and a particularly unique hand in shaping the American shade of Cabaret and which vocalists of the time (e.g. Bette Midler, Eartha Kitt, Rosemary Clooney) became integral figures in what would become the history of U.S. cabaret.

The combination of music, theater, dancing and unique fashions brought about through Cabaret were more than vibrant enough to easily make a collective, lasting mark on history –both musical and social. That said, the trend itself began notably receding in the 1960s when more rock shows started to gain popularity as entertainment. Now in the present, venues specializing in cabaret programming and offering a similar structure of presenting venue to that of the U.S. and Europe in the 19th to 20th centuries and one could even say it is undergoing somewhat of a revival in public interest and appeal.

While Long Island isn’t specifically known for an extensive cabaret scene, on 24 September 2015, a bit of current day cabaret is being put together and offering up an assortment of musicians, burlesque performers, Tarot readings, sideshow presentations and other dramatic forms of art, for one night of classic live entertainment, speakeasy-style drinks and more!

Six bands gracing all manner of swing, jazz, soul, big band and more are gathering at 89 North Music Venue. Hear their swinging sounds and then go see them live. Full show details below!
